Best engineering blogs to follow

I asked software engineers on X to name the tech blogs they keep going back to, and their replies make up 161 of the 211 blogs in this directory; the other 50 are picks I added to cover AI engineering and more of the company engineering blogs. Every one of them is listed below with a one-line description, and you can search the list or filter it by topic.

Engineering blogs by topic

Databases and storage

Database internals are one of the strongest parts of this list. Phil Eaton, Marc Brooker, Alex Miller and Justin Jaffray write about how databases are built, while Mark Callaghan publishes long-running performance benchmarks for MySQL, Postgres and RocksDB. Two company blogs, PlanetScale and ClickHouse, cover the same ground from the side of people who run these systems for customers; bits & pages explains storage engines from first principles.

Distributed systems

Martin Kleppmann and Jack Vanlightly are the usual starting points, and Murat Demirbas reviews distributed systems papers at a pace few people can match. Werner Vogels writes from the position of having run one of the largest of these systems, and Cindy Sridharan covers observability and testing in production.

Compilers and programming languages

Languages and compilers are the largest single topic on the list. Bob Nystrom, Max Bernstein and Andy Wingo write about interpreters, runtimes and garbage collection. Aleksey Kladov, Nicholas Matsakis, Ralf Jung and Amos Wenger are the names to follow for Rust, and Russ Cox and Eli Bendersky for Go. Fangrui Song is the person to read on linkers.

Performance and low-level engineering

Brendan Gregg on systems performance and Daniel Lemire on SIMD and algorithms publish often and measure everything. Travis Downs and Denis Bakhvalov go down to how the processor itself behaves. Dan Luu, who was named by more people than anyone else on this list, writes long, heavily researched essays on performance, hardware and how engineering organisations work.

Graphics and game development

Aras Pranckevičius and Fabian Giesen cover rendering, compression and optimisation in depth. Amit Patel at Red Blob Games and Bartosz Ciechanowski build interactive explanations that are worth opening even if you never write graphics code.

Security and cryptography

Filippo Valsorda and Matthew Green explain cryptography engineering for people who are not cryptographers. Colin Percival and Seth Larson write about security from the side of maintaining software that other people depend on.

Operating systems, tooling and debugging

Julia Evans explains Linux, networking and git more clearly than most documentation does. Chris Siebenmann has posted Unix system administration notes almost daily for years, Rachel Kroll tells debugging stories from large production systems, and Ken Shirriff reverse-engineers old chips down to the transistor.

AI and machine learning

Few of the replies named an AI blog, so most of this section is my own picks. Simon Willison writes about using LLMs in practice, Hamel Husain and Eugene Yan about evals and applied LLM systems, and Chip Huyen about ML systems design. Lilian Weng publishes long survey posts on agents and prompting; Andrej Karpathy and Jay Alammar explain how neural networks and transformers work from the ground up.

Company engineering blogs

Six company blogs were recommended by name: Cloudflare, Tailscale, PlanetScale, ClickHouse, Pinterest Engineering and Skyscanner Engineering. Cloudflare and PlanetScale were each named by more than one person. The rest of the company blogs here are my own additions, among them Netflix TechBlog, Stripe Engineering, Amazon Builders' Library, Jane Street and Zerodha Tech.

How this list was put together

On 1 October 2026 I posted one question on X: which tech blogs do you like, whether company blogs, personal blogs or Substack. I went through every reply and quote post, including the ones that answered with a screenshot or a link to another list, and collected each blog that was named.

Most of the list, 144 of the 211 blogs, comes from Required Reading on The Consensus, which Phil Eaton maintains as a roll of experienced writers who keep publishing strong articles on hard topics in software infrastructure. Phil pointed to it in his reply, and it is worth reading at the source, where it also comes with a combined feed. Another 17 came from individual replies and quote posts, and they widen the list into company engineering blogs, Substack, iOS and CSS.

I then added 50 blogs myself, and they are marked as Editor's pick in the directory. The replies leaned heavily towards systems and infrastructure, which left AI engineering and most of the well-known company engineering blogs unrepresented, and those are the two gaps my picks fill.

Where someone gave a name without a link, I added the link. The one-line descriptions and the topic tags are ours, written to help you decide what to open first, and they are short by design; a writer who has published for fifteen years does not fit in twelve words. If a description undersells a blog you know well, tell me and I will fix it.

Nothing here is ranked. Blogs named by more than one person are marked, and that is the only ordering signal on the page.

Frequently asked questions

Which engineering blogs should I start with?

Start with the ones more than one person named: Dan Luu, Julia Evans, Eli Bendersky, Cloudflare and PlanetScale. After that, filter by the topic closest to your work and pick two blogs from it; reading a few writers closely pays off more than skimming all 211.

How do I follow this many blogs without checking each one?

Use an RSS reader. Almost every personal blog on this list publishes a feed, and The Consensus offers a single combined feed for the 144 writers on its Required Reading list.

Are company engineering blogs worth reading?

The good ones are. A company blog earns a place when it explains how a system works or what went wrong during an incident, in enough detail that you could apply it elsewhere. The six named in the replies were recommended for that reason, and I held my own additions to the same bar.

Is this list ranked?

No. It is a curated directory, and each blog named in the replies is shown with who named it; an Editor's pick is one I added myself. A blog named once by someone who has read it for ten years may be a better fit for you than one named by several people.

Where did the recommendations come from?

Replies and quote posts under a single question on X, plus Required Reading on The Consensus, which Phil Eaton shared in his reply and which accounts for 144 of the 211 entries. A further 50 are my own picks, marked as Editor's pick.

How can I suggest a blog that is missing?

Reply to the original post on X with the name and the link. I read the replies and update this page.

A note on who maintains this

Maximem maintains this page. We build Synap, a memory layer for AI agents, and several of the writers on this list are regular reading for our team.
